Well after long last, here is the in-car footage of a couple of stages from the 2008 Dunlop Targa Rally in New Zealand.  Special thanks to Streetfire.net for providing the camera equipment.

STILLEN Ford GT Targa Rally New Zealand 2008

These videos are both from Day 1 (of 6 days) of the rally, and are full stages, giving you some of what it’s like to be part of such a neat event such as this.

Kyle Millen’s Introductions

“This was one of the longest stages of the rally.  It offered very diverse conditions.  Some spots were tight and twisty, others were wide open and fast, and a few spots were like hill climbs.  We caught four cars in this stage and we ended up beating the eventual race winner by over 30 seconds through this stage.”

“This stage was pretty tricky.  It was mostly wet and pretty treacherous.  You can see where a few cars went off.  It wouldn’t have been to go off the road in these stages as some of the drop offs were pretty tall.  This stage was run through mainly mountain roads….It was a BLAST!!!”

Streetfire.net also came down to the STILLEN compound and got a chance to sit down with Steve and Kyle after the event to discuss the rally and plans for the 2009 Targa Rally.

Subscribe to the blog as we prepare our Nissan GT-R for Targa Newfoundland this year.  A complete build is in order, and AWD on tap.. look for even more excitement.  We encourage you to follow along through this build and Targa event.

STILLEN and AP Racing are proud to announce the release of upgraded Curved Vane Front and Rear Brake Rotors for the R35 Nissan GT-R.  These AP Racing R35 GT-R Brake Rotor are a track-proven upgrade to the OE Brembo components.

STILLEN AP Racing Nissan GT-R R35 Upgraded Curved Vane Brake Rotors

The STILLEN / AP Racing Curved Vane Rotors utilize a curved-vane core (48 vanes) which allow for better thermal management, providing improved cooling over the OE pillar vane design.  They also have 12 curved slots which improve pad bite and not prone to cracking under severe use, which the OE rotors are plagued by.

The need for these rotors became evident quickly when GT-R owners in the UK began touring various race tracks, and having issues with standard discs only lasting 2-3 track days at the maximum.  AP Racing was contacted, and within a couple of weeks rotors were available and testing began.

Results were all positive, with no signs of cracking, and consistency of pedal and performance were reported.

Highlights from the STILLEN R35 GT-R Brake Rotor Product Page:

  • Top quality, proprietary iron alloy with multi-stage thermal processing.
  • Curved-vane core (48 vanes) for better thermal management under extreme use. More expensive to make, but improved cooling over the OE pillar vane design.
  • 12 curved slots (not drilled!) to improve pad bite and resist cracking under severe use.
  • Precisely balanced at high RPM for smooth operation at any vehicle speed.
  • Friction faces finished on the latest generation twin-turning equipment, better DTV (Disc Thickness Variation) and less runout than typical double-disc grinding machines.
  • Includes fresh hardware for track-day confidence every day.
  • Added bonus: Even priced less than the standard OE discs!

Car & Driver released their testing results on several Nissan GT-R’s they have had in their October 2008 article from their website.

Car & Driver Nissan GT-R Dyno

Excerpt from the online article:

On MotorCity Speed’s Mustang dyno in Commerce Township, Michigan, GT-R No. 4 produced a peak of 415 horsepower at the wheels. Based on our 20-percent loss estimate, the engine output was 519, or 39 horsepower more than Nissan’s stated 480.

They go on to state they felt this more accurately explains the testing results they’ve had against the Corvette Z06, where their test GT-R outran the Z06 in both 0-60 (3.3 vs. 3.4 seconds) and in the quarter mile (11.5 at 124 mph versus 11.8 at 125).

As a side note, it’s been our experience that Mustang dynos generally show lower horsepower numbers compared to other dynamometer companies, such as Dynojet, Dynapak, etc.

Nissan recently hosted their official Grand Opening and Dedication for their Corporate Headquarters in Franklin, Tennessee.  Nissan asked Steve Millen to be on hand for the festivities, including taking 25 lucky employees who had won an internal Nissan contest for a spirited ride in the new Nissan GT-R.

While at the event, Brian Sullivan from Fox Business sought out Steve to discuss the GT-R.  Check out the video of the interview below:

Yesterday Steve Millen was out in Los Angeles for the first delivery of the Nissan GT-R, and while out there Adam from StreetFire.net got a chance to interview Steve regarding the recent controversies surrounding the Road & Track and Car & Driver testing of the Nissan GT-R versus the Corvette Z06 and Porsche GT2, and various other topics.

Video of the StreetFire.net interview is below:

EDIT:  It would seem that this is again creating some buzz in related forums, listed below:

At exactly 12:01am this morning on July 7, 2008, the first Nissan GT-R was delivered to the first consumer owner, and STILLEN was on hand at Universal Nissan in Los Angeles for this historic event.

Nissan asked Steve Millen to be on hand to present the vehicle, and deliver a specially painted replica helmet which included the date and details of the first GT-R delivery. And the first GT-R to be delivered is…..

A Black Obsidian Premium Model.
