In the realm of car enthusiasts and performance upgrades, few modifications hold as much significance as air intakes. These components play a pivotal role in enhancing engine performance by optimizing the flow of air into the combustion chamber. If you’re looking to boost your vehicle’s power and efficiency, understanding the different types of air intakes and their benefits is essential.

Why Upgrade Your Air Intake?

Before delving into the intricacies of air intake options, let’s highlight why upgrading your stock air intake system is crucial for maximizing performance:

  1. Improved Airflow: Stock air intake systems are designed with compromises to meet various requirements. Aftermarket air intakes offer larger filter surfaces and smoother airflow pathways, allowing your engine to breathe more efficiently.
  2. Enhanced Filtration: Upgraded air filters, whether oil or dry filters, provide better filtration capabilities compared to stock filters. This ensures that only clean air enters the engine, reducing the risk of debris and contaminants causing damage.
  3. Increased Power: By optimizing air intake, your engine can generate more power. Cold air intakes, in particular, draw cooler, denser air from outside the engine bay, resulting in improved combustion and higher horsepower and torque figures.
  4. Customization Options: Aftermarket air intakes come in various styles and designs, allowing you to personalize your vehicle while also enhancing performance.
Dry / Oil / Oiled STILLEN Air Filter

Oiled Versus Dry

When it comes to air filters, two primary options dominate the market: oil filters and dry filters. Here’s a brief overview of each:

Oil / Oiled STILLEN Air Filter

Advantages of Oiled Filters:

  1. Water Resistance: The oil coating acts as a barrier to prevent water from entering the filter material or intake tube, making them ideal for high humidity or wet environments.
  2. Requires Periodic Re-Oiling: Ensures optimal performance and longevity of the filter, adding an extra step to maintenance but maintaining peak efficiency.
  3. Optimal Airflow: Provides slightly better airflow compared to dry filters.
Dry STILLEN Air Filter

Advantages of Dry Filters:

  1. No Oiling Required: Simplifies maintenance and eliminates the risk of over-oiling, which can damage the Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor.
  2. Multiple Layers of Filtering Material: Utilizes multiple layers of filtering material for superior filtration efficiency, capturing even smaller particles and ensuring cleaner airflow to the engine.
  3. Effective Contaminant Trapping: Traps contaminants while maintaining excellent airflow for engine protection without sacrificing performance.

When choosing between a dry or oiled filter for your cold air intake, consider the driving conditions and your personal preferences. Oiled filters excel in wet environments and require periodic re-oiling for optimal performance and longevity, while dry filters are better suited for dry or dusty conditions and offer simplified maintenance. Ultimately, both types offer benefits that can enhance your vehicle’s performance and driving experience.

Choosing the Right Air Intake

Now that you understand the importance of air intakes let’s explore the different types available:

  1. Short Ram Intakes: Ideal for enthusiasts seeking a balance between performance and affordability, short ram intakes offer easy installation and increased airflow compared to stock systems. They provide a noticeable improvement in engine response and power output.
  2. Long Tube/Cold Air Intakes: For those prioritizing maximum performance gains, long tube or cold air intakes are the way to go. These intakes draw cooler, denser air from outside the engine bay, resulting in significant horsepower and torque increases. While installation may be more complex, the performance benefits justify the effort and cost.

Upgrading your car’s air intake system is a surefire way to unlock its full potential on the road or track. Whether you opt for a short ram intake for a practical upgrade or invest in a long tube or cold air intake for maximum performance gains, the benefits are undeniable. Choose wisely based on your budget, performance goals, and installation preferences, and enjoy the exhilarating driving experience that follows. Are you looking to upgrade your vehicle’s exhaust system for a boost in performance and a distinctive sound? Let’s delve into the world of aftermarket exhausts, specifically comparing axle back and cat back systems to help you make an informed decision.

Axle Back Exhaust Systems:

Axle back exhaust systems offer a balance between performance, style, and sound enhancement. They are a cost-effective option compared to cat back systems. By replacing the exhaust components from the rear axle to the tailpipe, axle back systems provide a noticeable change in exhaust tone and aesthetics.

2022+ HYUNDAI ELANTRA N STILLEN CAT-BACK EXHAUST SYSTEM

The benefits of axle back systems include:

  1. Improved Sound: Experience a richer and more aggressive exhaust note without breaking the bank.
  2. Enhanced Style: Many manufacturers offer customization options, including various finishing tips such as carbon fiber, blue burnt tips, or polished stainless steel.

Cat Back Exhaust Systems:

For those seeking maximum performance gains, cat back exhaust systems are the go-to choice. Unlike axle back systems, cat back upgrades replace components from the catalytic converters to the tailpipe, eliminating restrictive elements like crush bands and mufflers.

Key advantages of cat back systems include:

  1. Optimized Performance: By employing mandrel bent tubing and less restrictive mufflers, cat back systems allow exhaust gases to exit more efficiently, resulting in increased power.
  2. Comprehensive Upgrade: Cat back systems provide a holistic enhancement to the entire exhaust system, ensuring a consistent boost in performance.

Customization Options:

One of the exciting aspects of upgrading your exhaust system is the ability to customize its appearance. Manufacturers offer various finishing tips, allowing you to choose between carbon fiber, blue burnt tips, polished stainless steel, or even unique finishes like black ceramic coating.

In conclusion, whether you opt for an axle back or a cat back exhaust system depends on your priorities. If you’re looking for a cost-effective way to enhance sound and style, an axle back system might be the ideal choice. However, if maximizing performance gains is your primary goal, investing in a cat back system will provide a comprehensive upgrade for your vehicle’s exhaust.

Upgrade your driving experience, unleash the full potential of your vehicle, and make a statement on the road with a carefully chosen aftermarket exhaust system.

Why Gen 2 and Gen 3 STILLEN Intakes?

STILLEN has been at the forefront of high-performance cold air intakes, and our journey with the Nissan Z34 and Infiniti VQ37 equipped cars has been nothing short of groundbreaking. We started with the Gen 1 Cold Air Intake, offering a small gain in power and a captivating sound enhancement. The Gen 2 Long Tube Intake refined the design and power output, becoming one of our best-selling air intake kits.

The skeptics fueled our determination to push the boundaries further, leading to the development of the Generation 3 Ultra Long Tube Cold Air Intake Kit for the Nissan 370Z. At STILLEN, all our products are designed and manufactured in-house, giving us the ability to test numerous configurations and fine-tune our designs until we achieve the desired results.

Unprecedented Power Gains [Gen 3]:

Our R&D team tirelessly tested over 50 variations before perfecting the Gen 3 design for the VQ37HR engine. The result? A dyno-proven 17.5 Horsepower (WHP) and 13 ft/lb (WTQ) gains on the 370Z with STOCK ECU TUNE. This achievement is unparalleled among performance intakes for non-turbo/non-SC’d cars.

370Z Gen3 Intake

Optimized Design for Maximum Performance:

Both the Gen 2 and Gen 3 intakes boast updated designs with integrated systems of variable diameter tubing and steps, maximizing air velocity. The strategically placed large STILLEN air filters ensure exposure to the coldest-possible incoming air, enhancing performance.

Easy Installation for Maximum Impact:

While the power gains are extraordinary, we’ve ensured that the installation process is straightforward. While removal of the front fascia clip and slightly enlarging the holes through the front core support is recommended for optimal results, it’s worth noting that the bumper removal process is quite manageable with basic hand tools.

The Numbers

From the factory the Z and Q50/Q60 3.0t is rated at 400 flywheel horsepower. On our dyno we saw a maximum wheel horsepower output of 336 horsepower at 6300 RPM*. This is about a 15% drivetrain loss*. Great work by NISSAN to get all of that power to the ground. After installing our Trucontrol piggyback ECU the dyno reported back a Max horsepower output of 392 wheel horsepower at 5390 RPM*. Simply by installing the Trucontrol ECU into our Z and Q50/Q60 3.0t we were able to gain more than 70 flywheel horsepower.

Even more amazing than the gains in horsepower are the gains in torque output. As you can see in the dyno the factory torque curve begins to decline at just over 3500 RPM*. At this RPM the stock car produced 338 ft. lbs of torque*. The Trucontrol by STILLEN is at 393 ft. lbs of torque*. Whereas the factory torque curve begins to decline, the STILLEN torque curve only increases further until reaching its maximum output at 4720 RPM*. At this point the factory output has declined to 323 ft. lbs*. while the TruControl by STILLEN has managed to increase to 409 ft. lbs of torque*. Truly amazing gains that make the Z and Q50/Q60 3.0t an absolutely incredible car to drive.

Infiniti of Melbourne - 2020 Infiniti Q50 RS400 STILLEN Front Splitter and Rear Diffuser

The STILLEN® Cat-Back Exhaust System for the VR30DDTT Infiniti Q50 and Infiniti Q60 3.0t has an aggressive tone under hard acceleration, but mellow during cruising, with that unmistakable STILLEN sound. STILLEN engineers unlocked a 26WHP and 29WTQ Gain. Those numbers are nothing to sneeze at, and you’d be hard pressed not to notice an additional 29lb/ft of torque.

2017-2018 Infiniti Q60 3.0T DYNO

STILLEN went through extensive design, engineering and testing to ensure the STILLEN Infiniti Q50 and Infiniti Q60 Cat-Back Exhaust Systems would be the best available for our customers. Designed to fit beautifully into the OEM valance or as a compliment to a STILLEN® Rear Diffuser, this system looks as good as it sounds. Available with three tip options to suit your tastes – choose from Carbon Fiber, Polished or Burnt-Titanium Look Tips to give your Q’s rear end that ‘extra something’ it needed.

2017-2018 Infiniti Q60 3.0TT Stainless Steel Cat-Back Exhaust System

Years of racing and product development have taught STILLEN that relying on computer software simulations or using comparable product data is not enough to produce the best possible product for our customers. There is no substitute for physical validation especially when it comes to the Nissan’s VR30 Engine. Numerous Infiniti Q50 and Infiniti Q60 Cat-Back Systems were tested through dyno pulls and extensive data logging. STILLEN’s rigorous procedures even included testing different merge angles between pipes. The result of STILLEN’s rigorous program found a “Y-Pipe” layout similar to what is found on the Nissan GTR VR38 Engine produced the best result.

The STILLEN Cat-Back Exhaust System consist of a Y-Pipe, Mid- Pipe, and Dual Mufflers w/ Interchangeable Tips. The 2.5″ diameter Y-Pipe configuration allows for better airflow. The Y-Pipe than connects to the Mid-Pipe. The 3″ diameter Mid-Pipe than carries the exhaust gases to the rear of the vehicle where it branches back into 2.5″ diameter dual rear exit. Upon meeting the rear exhaust pipes the exhaust gases flow through the STILLEN engineered and manufactured mufflers. The 4.5″ diameter bolt-on exhaust tips enable you to adjust the tip position for a proper fit no matter what bumper or aero you choose to run at the back. Finally, the exhaust note is mild and well-mannered under normal driving conditions, but quickly turns aggressive and authoritative when under throttle. The overall size of the STILLEN Cat Back Exhaust System will differ to the Infiniti Q50 and Infiniti Q60 respectively.

STILLEN’s use of mandrel bent 304 Stainless Steel backed by a limited lifetime warranty ensures your cat-back exhaust will last. The VR30DDTT Infiniti Q50 and Infiniti Q60 Cat Back Exhaust is proudly engineered and manufactured in the USA at its facilities in Costa Mesa, California.

STAND OUT FROM THE CROWD AND MAKE THE VALET STOP AND STARE!!

2018 q50 announcement

A VERITABLE CORNUCOPIA OF OPTIONS TAILORED SPECIFICALLY FOR YOUR ELEGANT SPORT SEDAN.

At STILLEN, as with all the performance vehicles we offer parts for, the goal with Infiniti Q50  was to enhance the car’s natural good looks, accentuating its curves and bodylines as well as increase power output and give it a more sporting exhaust note– all without taking away from the comfort or drivability of the car. We continued that work with our new line of performance offerings for the facelifted-for-2018 Infiniti Q50.

2018 q50 graphic 2

Power and Style are both on the menu here, but let’s start with the power and performance side of things.

For 2018, the Q now has the option of several variants of the VR30DDTT, a Turbocharged Inline 4 or the VQ37HR.

With 2018 fitment confirmed, we are proud to offer the STILLEN 2016-18 Infiniti Q50/Q60 3.0TT Intake System for the twin turbo V6 VR30DDTT.

Good for 17whp and 28wtq, these intakes are sure to make your twin turbo V6 much more responsive, and the extra oomph will give you the power you need to embarrass your jerk neighbor the next time you pull up to him at a red light.

Rounding out the power package, we’ve also confirmed the fitment of the STILLEN Catback Exhaust for 2016-2018 Infiniti Q50 / Q60 3.0TT. Available with your choice of Polished Tips, Burnt Tips or Carbon Fiber Tips, this exhaust system looks as good as it sounds – and with an astonishing 26whp / 29wtq gain, this exhaust system offers power, style and sound all in one package.

If the exhaust note doesn’t catch your passengers attention, that extra nearly 30 foot pounds of torque (remember, these are at-the-wheels numbers, not ‘at the crank’.) is sure to sink you and your passengers into your seats when you put your foot to the floor.

And of course, that brings us to style.

06_2018_Infitniti_Q50_STILLEN_Spliter_Front_3_4v4_WHITE_vs_stock

We’ve designed an all new urethane STILLEN Front Splitter for 2018 Infiniti Q50, custom fitted to the new 2018 front fascia. As with all our splitters, this offers a mild aerodynamic benefit as well as looking sharp. Available in Painted Matte Black finish (ready to install), or unfinished, ready for you to prep, prime and paint the color of your choice.

2018 Infiniti Q50 STILLEN Diffuser Splitter Spoiler (2)

Competition Infiniti certainly has that figured out, having fitting this showroom-fresh 2018 Infiniti Q50 with a suite of STILLEN 2018 Infiniti Q50 parts to make this sport sedan stand out from the crowd. Up front, the Q50 has been fitted with a matte black STILLEN Front Splitter for 2018 Q50. The painted matte black finish gives the splitter the appearance of a factory equipment option.

06_2018_Infitniti_Q50_STILLEN_Spliter_Front_3_4v4_WHITE_vs_stock

Compared side by side, it’s clearly more aggressive than stock and spices up the car a good bit. Molded in rugged, durable and resilient urethane, this front splitter is built to survive the road again, and won’t be wrecked the first time it brushes a steep driveway or something, as would happen with carbon fiber or fiberglass. This means you’ve got parts that will look good for years to come. The aggressive lines compliment the fluid styling of the ’18 Q50 refresh.

2018 Infiniti Q50 STILLEN Diffuser Splitter Spoiler (3)

Completing the look, at the rear of the car, the Q has been equipped with a STILLEN 2018 Infiniti Q50 Rear Diffuser, painted in matte black, like the front splitter.

Check out the side by side comparison – the rear diffuser especially dials up the aggression, and gives the car a race-car-for-the-street aesthetic sure to pique the interest of everyone that walks through the doors at Competition Infiniti. The cherry on top here is a STILLEN Trunk Spoiler for 2018-14 Infiniti Q50, which pairs beautifully with the diffuser.

All in all, these three simple cosmetic parts made quite the difference in this car’s aesthetic.
