As tracks go, none is more merciless than the Green Hell, Nordschleife. Known for its difficult corners, intimidating crests and varying road surfaces, Nordschleife is easily one of the most challenging tracks in the world. Its treacherous design is so demanding that it has been the testing ground for many OE protypes for decades – would be high performance vehicles are literally made or broken on this track. When we heard our friend, Hilmi T. was running his AP Racing by STILLEN Radi-CAL big brake kit (purchased through our friends at Sonic Tuning) on his E90 BMW M3 at Nordschleife, we were excited to see how the Radi-CAL brake kit would perform for him.

As you can see from the video above, the AP Racing by STILLEN Radi-CAL brake kit, handled the track with ease. Notice the G-forces the Radi-CAL brakes are able to withstand (example: Look at the lower left corner during minutes 2:46-4:00 or the turn at approximately the 6 minute mark). What the video isn’t able to show you is that this was only the 10th lap of 45 laps Hilmi enjoyed at the Green Hell. With better, semi-slick tires, he is hoping to celebrate an exceptional lap time of 7 minutes 25 seconds!

Benefits of the AP Racing by STILLEN Radi-CAL Brake Kit

Notoriously hard on brakes, the Nordschleife track really gave the AP Racing by STILLEN Radi-CAL brake kit an opportunity to show of the quality of its design. In a comparison between the OE components and the larger AP Radi-Cal components, the Radi-CAL brake kit features a larger diameter and thicker rotor, forged aluminum caliper, wider caliper and larger pad surface area. These benefits really became apparent as the brakes reached their peak rotor surface temperature at a maximum speed of 248 kph/155 mph and 1.2G braking forces. Under these conditions, the AP Racing Radi-CAL kit ran by 15+% cooler than the OE kit. By decreasing temperatures, the AP Racing by STILLEN Radi-CAL kit increases pad and rotor life. Hilmi actually  ran his 45 laps on the original Ferodo DSHP+ street/light track material that are supplied in the kit! Additionally, this helps keeps caliper temperatures well below 200-220C, which is the temperature level where servicing/resealing racing calipers becomes necessary. Lastly, the decrease in temperature also helps protect seals and keep brake fluid temperature far from its boiling point. The Green Hell was clearly no problem for the AP Racing by STILLEN brake kit!

During testing the Magnuson team got their Heartbeat supercharged and an otherwise stock car on their in-house dyno to see how much power it was making. As it turns out, it made an extra 140 hp for a final total of 530hp to the rear wheel!

Simply testing their supercharger kit in-house wasn’t enough for the Magnuson team. Instead, they took the Heartbeat supercharger kit to two of the most highly respected engine builders – Duttweiler Performance and Lingenfelter Performance Engineering to get their thoughts and to run some independent testing. The feedback they received from both builders was amazing! Lingenfelter actually stated that the Heartbeat supercharger generated the most horsepower they have ever made with a TVS 2300!

Last year at the SEMA show, STILLEN and AP Racing teamed up to introduce the revolutionary AP Racing by STILLEN Radi-CAL brake kit. Since then, this versatile big brake kit has taken the car world by storm and is quickly becoming a favorite amongst track enthusiasts, show cars enthusiasts and daily drivers. Now that the STILLEN Q50 has safely made it to Las Vegas for the 2014 SEMA show, we can peel off the protective tape, stand back and enjoy the look of this one-of-a-kind Q50.  With an AirRex lowering kit, Vossen Wheels, Nitto tires and various STILLEN performance and body components have been installed by the STILLEN performance shop, this is one nice looking Q50. Then add in a custom wrap and window tinting and suddenly, the STILLEN Q50 goes from nice looking to unforgettable!

We should also note that this Q50 is more than good looks… There wasn’t a trailer used to transport this STILLEN supercharged show car. Instead, it was driven the nearly 275 miles by Kyle Millen as it made the rainy trek from STILLEN headquarters in Costa Mesa, CA to Las Vegas, NV. In Kyle’s words, “The Q50 drove very well the whole way and didn’t even blink when driving through the rain.” Additionally, the name of this Q50 is SM500. The SM stands for Steve Millen and we’ll let you figure out what the 500 stands for… In true STILLEN spirit, this Q50 looks good and is ready to perform!

In just a few weeks, Team STILLEN will be unveiling our custom-built STILLEN Infiniti Q50 at the Las Vegas SEMA show! “The entire team here at STILLEN is very excited about this Infiniti Q50 project. For the past year STILLEN has been developing numerous parts for these great cars and this car represents a rolling catalog of just about everything that we offer for the Infiniti Q50. Our team carried out the STILLEN philosophy of looking at the entire car as a finished package. Starting with the exterior styling and moving into the car with the Q50 supercharger and STILLEN Q50 cat-back exhaust system, pushing power well into the 400 range. With all of this additional power we had to install one of our AP Racing by STILLEN big brake kits. To finish off the car we contacted our friends at Air Rex and installed one of their incredible air ride systems.  This is a very trick setup that really sets the car apart! Now with the car sitting lower and the big brakes installed we had to get the car finished off with the new Vossen VFS1 20″ wheels wrapped in Nitto Invo tires. This combination continues the luxury performance theme of the entire car.”

When asked about STILLEN’s new carbon fiber division, Millen had this to say, “For decades STILLEN has manufactured all of our products in-house with specialized divisions for manufacturing, metal fabrication, CNC machine shop and poly-urethane body kits. Here at STILLEN, we’ve got big things planned for the 2015 WRX and our splitter is just the start! Kyle Millen, STILLEN VP of Business Development, had this to say about the upcoming STILLEN WRX line:

“STILLEN is very excited to enter the Subaru WRX tuning community.  We have always admired the WRX and thought that they offered great bang for the buck and this new 2015 WRX carries on that legacy. We wanted to start our product development with the exterior styling of the car. The new car offers great looks already but we wanted to accentuate the aggressive front fascia even more and carry our racing heritage into the front splitter design. We have also begun looking into the brake upgrades, which will undoubtedly be necessary once these cars start hitting higher horsepower levels. Our AP Racing brakes by STILLEN have always been a favorite in the Subie world and we’re looking forward to bringing in some new technology with our latest line of calipers, which utilize the most innovative technology used in Formula One, WRC, Indy, and NASCAR. Stay tuned for more parts from STILLEN as we begin to dig into the new 2.0L FA20DIT engine. We have already been very impressed with the performance of this engine and can’t wait to push it to the limits!”
