Looks like cell phone coverage is decent out in Virginia City where STILLEN and Steve Millen are running the GT-R at the Spectre 341 Challenge. We’ll use this blog post as a place to post updates and photos we get back from the team.  We’ll have a full recap after the event ends.

Friday 6/25 – 11:20am (Kyle via text)

Phone works okay.. no real updates.. did drivers meeting this morning and the drivers got a tour of the race course with tips from Amir from Spectre

The HRE Porsche is pretty nice and looks well prepared and the LG Vette is nice.. light weight good tires.. all good

There’s a hearse here too!  I don’t know about it though.. I think they are just here

Friday 6/25 – 11:43am (Kyle via text)

The hearse now has numbers.. looks like it’s running!

Friday 6/25 – 12:33pm (Kyle via text)

Just started sprinkling and apparently they’re delaying the start (we’d really like to run!)

(Questioned Kyle on whether it was a get in line type of deal, or if everyone is running it a set number of times?)
Just get in line..

We haven’t even left the hotel.. were trying to convince them to let us run

There is 700-1100 horsepower Porsche.. there are some huge horsepower cars up here

Friday 6/25 – 12:33pm (Kyle via text)

We did find out though that they aren’t posting any times until tomorrow night.  We have a stop watch that we’ll keep track of our time, but we don’t know how everyone else is doing

Steve and Jodi Millen

That’s not a typo on Jodi’s race suit!

Friday 6/25 – 2:27pm (Kyle via text)

We were two minutes from starting but the safety crew had to leave for a local accident… no go on the restart.  The accident was not on the course.. the same crew is on call for the other highways as well.  Unfortunately this is cutting down on the number of possible runs.

Friday 6/25 – 2:52pm (Kyle via text)

Cars are away!!!  The GT-R was second in line!

Friday 6/25 – 3:20pm (Kyle via text)

First run was good.. they’re just going to increase boost.. tires are still a bit greasy but starting to come in

Friday 6/25 – 3:46pm (Kyle via text)

GT-R just took off for its second run.. looks like he’s chasing it harder this run

Friday 6/25 – 4:15pm (Kyle via text)

Here’s a quick video from a corner I’m standing on of the GT-R

Here’s a video of the Viper coming around the same corner

Friday 6/25 – 4:59pm (Kyle via text)

Done for the day.. Steve is pretty happy with the car and is still trying to scrub in the tires.  Only made three runs but I think they’re happy with what theyre seeing.

The high elevation has caused a big drop in boost but the TurboSmart boost controller is allowing them to adjust that and increase pressure.

Look for more updates tomorrow..

Saturday 6/26 – 9:08am (Kyle via text)

First run of the day they shaved 3.5 seconds off from their fast time from yesterday.

Saturday 6/26 – 9:34am (Kyle via text)

They just shaved another three seconds.

There is a really fast EVO up here with really sticky nittos and the driver has a lot of experience.

Saturday 6/26 – 9:59am (Kyle via text)

If we had some better tires like the Dunlops we’d be much faster.  Unfortunately the Dunlops are on national back order otherwise we’d have them on the car.. according to Nissan they’re good for around a second a mile faster.

Saturday 6/26 – 10:16am (Kyle via text)

Saturday 6/26 – 10:25am (Kyle via text)

We softened the STILLEN front sway bar last night, and Steve is saying its helped a lot and he can start turning the back of the car today.. I’m sure that’s where some of the time is coming from.

Saturday 6/26 – 10:40am (Kyle via text)

Quick video of the ZR1

Quick video of Steve and the STILLEN GT-R

Saturday 6/26 – 10:50am (Kyle via text)

Steve and Team STILLEN are done for the day.. the road is extremely slick, and the tires don’t have any grip any more.

With having to ship the car to New Zealand for the Targa Rally in a couple of days, and not having good tires, Steve’s just taking it kinda easy.

This is a fun event and we will be back for sure next year.

Only the excitement of going to the track can get me up at 5am with enthusiasm. The STILLEN crew rose before the sun to make the trek out to Willow Springs International Raceway for the Boost Festival 2017 by Honeywell Garrett event. This multi-faceted event was run in conjunction with Global Time Attack, Just Drift and Drift 101. For the time attack fans, GTA conducted its first round for 2017 on the Streets of Willow, while JustDrift took over the Horse Thief Mile track where participants smoked some tires. For those interested in learning to drift or seeking to improve their drifting skills, class was in session at the Balcony as Drift 101 conducted lessons on how to get slideways.

On Horse Thief Mile, JustDrift participants practiced drifting as Drift 101 instructed its students up at the Balcony.

In 2014 Nissan released digital images of their 2020 Vision Gran Turismo for the popular video game. It was designed to be a concept of future Nissan’s that you can experience in this virtual world. Now at the 2015 Tokyo Motor Show we see this concept come to life.

Nissan says, “Adapting design cues from current Nissan performance models, it was created from scratch using the latest digital design tools”. This is the first physical embodiment of the concept people were talking so much about just a year ago. The speculation that this is the GTR R36 might still be a stretch, but there is a good chance the styling cues seen on this concept will be present on the next “Godzilla” iteration.

We don’t expect to see anything official on the R36 any time soon as Nissan just demolished almost every production cars time on the Nürburgring with the GTR Nismo N-Attack. There is a good chance Nissan is just waiting for the rest of the car world to step up their game before releasing their next supercar killer. It is hard to say what exactly the plan is for this Legend, but no matter the outcome, it is fun to speculate.

Tony Jackson's BMW M3

The BMW E46 M3 is probably one of the most iconic vehicles to come out of Bavaria. Not too long ago, Tony Jackson (Eibach Springs account manager) was in the process of selecting a new track vehicle to replace his Honda Civic which he had been racing, and winning championships with for almost 10 years. Tony wanted something rear wheel drive and figured he’d start with one of the best platforms available.

On the Track

In stock form, Tony was very impressed with the M3’s performance. Tony didn’t feel the car needed a lot to make it more competitive so he set out to add only the necessary modifications. Working for one of the largest suspension companies in the world, you can imagine what was worked on first. Tony worked with the Engineers at Eibach to develop custom rear shocks that he paired with Eibach Springs and Sway Bars. The improvements to the suspension helped push the M3 further along on the track, but there was still a major weakness in the car.

Slow down to go faster

Tony noticed after only a couple of track days that the stock brakes weren’t up to par saying, “I noticed that the pistons were seizing up from too much heat.” He elected to go with the AP Racing by STILLEN Radi-CAL Big Brake Kit. The forged Calipers, Bigger Pads, and J-Hook Rotors really allowed him to manage the heat in the brakes a lot better. This translated to being able to dive into corners much harder and not worry about brake fade well anymore.

The advantages of the AP Radi-CAL Brakes are quite extensive. The pressure forged calipers design is derived from the highly successful race Radi-CAL caliper. Utilizing an asymmetrical design the piston are positioned in a way to reduce torsional stress on the rotor as the pistons apply pressure under braking. This forging technique also allows for less material to be used than in traditional casting making the caliper lighter and stronger at the same time. The unique gives us the ability to have a larger brake pad annulus (radial contact patch) than normally found on similar big brake kits. This allows us to utilize more of the rotor surface increasing heat transfer and management (read more about it here).

The AP Racing Big Brake Kit comes with rotor options. For Tony’s racing focused uses STILLEN recommended the J-Hook Slotted Rotors. The patented design increases durability and performance. The J-Hook design gives you all the benefits of a drilled and slotted rotor without any of the downsides. Drilled rotors can potentially crack from rapid expansion and contraction while racing, and traditional slots create a less even heat distribution throughout the rotor. Because the J-Hook machining does not penetrate through the rotors and does not completely transverse them radially, they are phenomenal at withstanding harder driving and higher temperatures (read more about J-Hook Rotors here).

Tony gave us some lap time improvements of tracks that he frequents.

  • Buttonwillow Raceway – 0.7 second improvement
  • Chuckwalla Valley Raceway – 1.1 second improvement
  • Willow Springs – 1.5 second improvement
  • Laguna Seca – 2.4 second improvement
  • Streets of Willow – 2.7 second improvement

Everyone puts an emphasis on power, but a lot of people forget the slowing down (efficiently) can make you faster than some extra horsepower. Also consider the added confidence the driver has in their car knowing they can continually push to the limit and the brakes will be there to support them.

More power is still nice…

We don’t want anyone to think we are against adding power, and neither is Tony. That is why he went to our friends over at Magnaflow and commissioned them to build a high flow and light weight single exit exhaust to help the powerful 3.2 straight six breathe a little better. The whole system saved about 50 lbs and really helped open up the top end of the power band.

Wrapping it all up

All these modifications are great, but let’s not forget what makes all these upgrades useable. Connecting the all this horsepower, suspension, and braking performance to the ground are Nitto NT01’s wrapped around a set of Volk Racing forged ZE40’s.

STILLEN Partners with the best companies in the industry for all of our projects, so it is no surprise to see that Tony did the same with his M3. Tony is currently leading both Super Lap Battle and Global Time Attack series in points (for his class). This is one of our favorite examples of someone who understands that racing is about balance and synergy.

If you have questions about our BMW E46 M3 Big Brake Kit or any of our Big Brake Kits for other makes and models please visit our website (www.stillen.com) or give one of our performance specialists a call at 800-576-2131.

For the past couple weeks or so, we have been giving you random snapshots of our top-notch Performance Center in action. Although, most people aren’t aware that STILLEN has a full service garage, the people who do know keep coming back because they know this is one place where you can get the right work done at the right price. I could spend an entire week covering a new daily project the Performance Center is working on and I still wouldn’t be able to scratch the service all the services these guys do. From Dyno tuning, to Corner Balancing, to Fab Work, to Routine Oil Changes, we literally can do it all. If you don’t believe me, here are a couple photos that are prime examples of the range of work we can do.

GTR Custom STILLEN roll cage

Sometimes a modded Nissan GTR just isn’t enough for some people, crazy I know, but we salute those who want to take their GTR to the next level. This customer wanted to turn his daily beast into a track ready monster. We helped by upgrading just about every area of the car, including this custom built STILLEN roll cage.

Chevy LS1 swap

LS1 swaps are becoming more and more popular these days and people are putting them in just about anything. While I can’t divulge which application this LS1 went into, I can say that we added a “mild” cam and used an aluminum block to save the customer 80lbs off the front end and to give him roughly 500 crank horsepower.

To my knowledge there are only two places in the world that are certified to do transmission rebuilds on the FORDGT, we happen to be one of them. Luckily, all this customer needed was a new clutch and throw out bearing which we happily replaced for him.

There are very few shops people trust working on their GTR’s.  Needless to say, this customer and plenty of other’s often turn to STILLEN as their first stop as soon as they get one.  This particular GTR is getting a new set of brake pads and new tires installed on his 2011.

FordF150dynotune

We offer dyno tuning services on just about any application, from sub compact 4 bangers to Coyote equipped 5.0L F150’s, to everything in-between.  There’s a little surprise under the hood of that bad boy that you can read more about in an upcoming issue of TRUCKIN’ magazine.

Most people think that once you slam you’re car on a decent set of coil-overs you are ready to attack the street and track but more often than not your car’s alignment actually gets worse in terms of handling. That’s exactly why our Performance Center offers alignment and corner balancing services to keep your car planted to the ground and pointing in the right direction.

We are always working on improving and optimizing our current list of products available through our Performance Center.

The benefits of having a Dyno in-house is that we can always test, and retest simulated road conditions while monitoring the results in real time. Keeping us ahead of the curve when it comes to product development. We can also revisit past products and find room for improvement.

I forgot to mention we are AFTERMARKET FRIENDLY!!! I know that seems rather obvious but I can’t tell you how many times I’ve taken my car to the WRONG shop for some routine maintenance and they have either broken or taken off my aftermarket parts because they had no idea what they did.

(I once had a dealership rip off my INGS+1 side skirts when I took my Subaru in for an OIL CHANGE!!! I wish I knew about STILLEN before I did that)
