STILLEN is excited to announce the much anticipated launch of the 2019 and up Chevy Silverado Cold Air Intake Scoop

The factory air intake system on the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 is a very unique and creative design.  During testing our engineers placed multiple temperature probes throughout the engine bay and access panels of the Silverado engine bay in order to find the coldest possible air source.

Additionally, Chevy and GMC uses a latticework type of material over the top of the intake scoop design. This latticework material increases turbulence, and every time you work the air, you’re introducing heat into the system.

With that being said, we looked at the design and we saw areas of opportunity to improve the performance. Also to reduce the intake air temperature and increase the air volume.

Now the intake scoop has a simple flow through design. The air comes in through the grille and straight into the intake tract. In fact, the scoop actually isolates the radiator heat.

We are very proud of the STILLEN Intake Scoop for the GMC Sierra and we’re even more proud to say that this is manufactured here in house in Costa Mesa, California. Since 1986, STILLEN has been a leader in Urethane manufacturing and high performance automotive parts and accessories.

STILLEN is excited to announce the much anticipated launch of the 2019 and up Chevy Silverado Cold Air Intake Scoop.  The team at STILLEN have created several videos showcasing the features and benefits of this true cold air intake scoop.

Turns out, Chevrolet engineers did a pretty good job of finding a great source of fresh air. Knowing that repositioning the air intake would not be beneficial our team of designers began looking at ways to improve the airflow and find additional benefits.

Pretty quickly our team noticed that the path of the airflow was good, but quite disruptive.  The air had to travel through the grille, up the radiator, through the lattice work of the shroud then around the radiator shroud and finally into the intake scoop.

This presented two problems.

1) There is no natural path for the air to flow through.

Every one of these turbulent areas, every interference causes restriction and/or causes work for the air.  The goal is to get the air into and through the air intake system as cleanly and efficiently as possible.

2) The air is susceptible to being heated by the radiator.

The air must travel up the face of the radiator in order to make its way into the air intake opening.  Keep in mind, the radiators operational temperature is 180-220 degrees….Significantly higher than ambient.

To solve the two problems with this otherwise fantastic design the design team at STILLEN began by creating a proper scoop.  This scoop lowers the base of the radiator shroud to be in line with the top bar of the famous Chevrolet grille. This new design allows for the air to come directly into the intake system without being warmed by the radiator, or disrupted by the lattice type material in the radiator shroud.  This design eliminates the pre-heating and the turbulence caused by the factory system.

During our development our team noticed that the factory ¾ and 1 ton trucks actually have scoops in their radiator shroud designs also which confirmed that the TruPower by STILLEN cold air intake scoop for the Chevy Silverado was on the right track!

An additional benefit to this air intake is that it will work with any aftermarket air intake system that utilizes the factory air intake scoop.

STILLEN® is proud to announce the development of the Trupower by STILLEN cold air intake scoop for the 2019 Chevy Silverado.  Follow along as we let you in on all of the behind the scenes details that goes into developing this True cold air intake system to enhance the Chevy Silverado.

To start with the team began analyzing the 3D scanned CAD data to see how the factory air intake works.  By understanding how Chevrolet has engineered the factory system we are able to begin working on our concept for how to improve it.

We immediately saw that Chevy has developed a very unique air intake system from the factory that pulls air from the factory radiator covers to duct air into a tube that then goes in to the filter box.  The enters this tract by first traveling through the front grille area and then working its way up the radiator, through the lattice work material and the design of the hood and core support guides the air into the inlet tube.

Once we had a thorough understanding of this we began to look at ways to introduce even fresher, colder air into the system.  The team began mocking up some renderings in CAD until we had a few design ideas and were ready to bring in a vehicle for physical test fitment.

We always bring in a vehicle for physical test fitment before we proceed with building prototype parts because it is pretty common that the CAD data is missing a part, or some detail that you can only see once you have the subject vehicle in front of you.  This was the case again with the Chevy Silverado.  We immediately noticed that there were some support braces on the truck that were not present in the CAD data.

Additionally, with the vehicle in hand we are able to begin gathering engineering data from the vehicle.  We start by installing a series of sensors under the hood that allow us to monitor the temperature of the air in specific areas around the engine bay.  This way we can design our air intake system to bring in the coldest, freshest air possible.

With all of our engineering data, CAD models, and physical inspections completed we are able to begin building our prototypes.  Stay tuned for our next post and videos that walk through the product design and function in more detail.
