2016 Infiniti Q50 3.0t Red Sport

With Nissan/Infiniti recently announcing the release of their new Twin Turbo V6, we wanted to take a closer look at this motor and what is means for the Aftermarket industry and Automotive Enthusiasts.

The all new ‘VR’ 3.0 Liter V6 Twin Turbo motor is touted by Nissan/Infiniti to be the most advanced V6 they have ever offered. With features like Direct Injection, high efficiency turbos, electronic wastegate actuator, etc, there is a lot to talk about.

Let us start with the pros of this engine when thinking about aftermarket tuning and modifications.

  • Twin Turbos…I repeat…Twin Turbos! Some of the most exciting times in the Tuning Scene were in the 90’s when most of the big import sports cars featured factory turbos. When a car comes factory equipped with a turbo charging system, many of the inherent challenges are solved. Is the engine bay properly designed to manage the heat generated? Is the engine able to handle the pressure of forced induction? Is the engine bay big enough to house turbos? All of these potential hurdles are instantly removed because the turbos and infrastructure are already there.
  • Direct Injection! Direct Injection systems have much higher flow ratings than they use so when adding power there is no need to upgrade the fuel system (to a point).
  • Electronic Wastegate Actuator. In the past the turbo wastegates were controlled by pressure and dictated by a boost controller. With an electronic wastegate actuator, you can control the wastegate and the amount of boost you make more accurately and variably. Nissan is using this to make more power on the 400 hp variant of this motor, and we should be able to have a lot of fun with it once we have an ECU control. If it is not possible to control the wastegate through the ECU there is always the option of using an aftermarket diaphragm style wastegate actuator and using a standalone boost controller. If and when ECU control is available it will be the most cost effective and best option.
  • Oxygen Sensor & Exhaust Pressure Sensor. Oxygen (O2) Sensors are obviously a crucial part of tuning. However, on forced induction motors the way O2 sensors record data is different because of the change in air properties under pressure. The addition of an Exhaust Pressure Sensor allow for more accurate scaling, tuning, and data in regards to the gases coming out of the cylinders. This means better and safer tuning when adding power.
  • Square Engine (1:1 Bore to Stroke Ratio). Utilizing a 86mm Bore and 86mm Stroke the new VR Motor is a “Square Engine”. The Square design gives a balance of Torque and Horse power (Torque is more dependent on total displacement while Horsepower is more dependent on valve area). With Square motor, you also get a smoother transition between the torque and horsepower power curve.

Other nice things we have noticed about the new VR 3.0 TT V6.

  • V-Band Coupler from Turbo to Down Pipe. This will make replacing the factory catalytic converter with a free flowing down pipe easy and leak free. V-Bands are one of the most effective ways to fasten exhaust parts together (especially areas of higher pressure and heat). Because the V-Band Coupler applies an inward radial force compressing the flange together, you have less chance for an exhaust leak with less effort of tightening.
  • No VVEL! Not that VVEL was inherently bad, but it was a major culprit in the heat issues experienced in the outgoing VQ engine. Nissan/Infiniti has switched to a new Valve Timing System (controlled by an electric motor accord to them).
  • Standard Turbos. With no mention of twin scroll technology, this could mean for more options when it comes to possibly upgrading the turbos.
  • Exhaust System. It looks like the cat-back section of the exhaust has not changed with the new motor. This would mean the current cat-back and axle-back options would still work. Do note, most cat-backs were not designed with forced induction in mind. STILLEN does have an advantage here because we designed our Cat-Backs to work with forced induction. This mainly applies for the Q50 as it will be the first Nissan/Infiniti to get the new Turbo motor.
  • Oil Filter. The location of the oil filter look very convenient for installing an oil cooler. While we don’t anticipate the VR 3.0 TT to have the same heat issues that the VQ’s had, it is always beneficial to keep those oil temps in check.

There will be some challenges, hurdles, and limitations. From what we have seen in diagrams and specification here are going to be some of the limiting factors of this motor and some possible solutions (these are just possibilities that cannot be confirmed till we have this motor to actually look at in person).

  • Integrated Exhaust Manifolds. While this does help reduce the size of the motor and provide some nifty emissions benefits, it does limit the capabilities of what we can do aftermarket.
  • Optical Turbo Speed Sensor (only available on 400hp variant). While this is an amazing tool for tuning and being able to run the turbo at peak efficiency, it does not come on the 300hp variant of the motor. This might make tuning less accurate. We won’t know till we take a closer look, but there is a huge advantage to being able to tune based on both boost and turbine speed.
  • Water-Cooled Intercooler System. While Air to Water intercoolers are great, they do provide some potential stumbling blocks on this motor. If you look at the location, it will be difficult to upgrade them. While upgrading the heat exchanger in front and possible the pump is fairly easy, big power would most likely require a Air to Air setup and the turbos are positioned to feed directly into the factory coolers. Just means more piping than what we’d like to add if that becomes the case.
  • Intake Manifold. You can see there might be some major restrictions, bottle necks, and harsh turns on the factory unit. This may be simple to remedy, but depending on how the manifold is designed and what the reset of the manifold and lower plenum look like it could be difficult and expensive. At first glance you can see some areas that look restrictive, but from other angles you can see how it is just a design feature, and not a bottle neck.
  • Air Boxes. Because we know the core support design has not changed in the new Q50, new air intake systems will require some major testing to see if we can place the filter outside of the engine bay. This is more crucial on the Turbo motor than the old VQ37 because turbo motors generate much more heat in the engine bay. When the new Q60 and Z are released we can see if the design is different than the Q50.

While all of this is based off of the information provided, and images available, we cannot say for sure what the potential is until we have one to do testing with. Never the less, we are very excited for the newest V6 from Nissan/Infiniti and can’t wait to start tuning them.

STILLEN Attends the First Annual NissFest!!!

STILLEN is deep rooted in the Nissan/Infiniti Community. So obviously when we heard there was going to be a new annual event for Nissan & Infiniti, we had to get involved.

The 1st Annual NissFest event was held at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana. With this being the first show and also taking place a little later in the year we were still very happy with the turn out. It was great seeing a lot of the local Nissan/Infiniti Enthusiasts happy to come out, show off their cars, visit vendors, and also just admire what others had done to their cars as well. We are very much looking forward to next year and hope to see even more people attend!

It was also great to see so many cars featuring STILLEN Parts. Here are some of our favorites from the show!

The annual OC Auto Show has always been a great way for Orange County Residents to see what is current in the Automotive world without having to make the big trek up to Los Angeles a month later.

If you are in Orange County and want a convenient way to go look at all the cars currently on the market and a few prototypes as well, the Auto Show is a great event. There are definitely some great cars that we found interesting and exciting. Our top 3 would have to be…

Toyota FT-1:

The “Supra Successor” has been a big topic of discussion in the car community for years. While there are still a lot of detail unreleased, if this car makes it to production in the near future it will be epic. If you haven’t had a chance to see it in person, photos don’t do it justice.

Ford Focus RS:

The epic hatch is filling the empty shoes left by the late Mitsubishi Evo X. With a 2.3L Turbocharged Engine putting down around 350 HP to all 4 wheels. Looks like the Subaru WRX STI is gonna have some competition again.

Lexus GS-F:

Lexus has been teasing GS owners for years with the idea of a M5 competitor. With the newest generation of the GS released, Lexus has finally delivered on their promise. Though not the most stunning in stock form, we feel the body lines and shape have great potential to our fellow enthusiasts out there.

If you want to check everything out in person tickets are only $12.00 and the show runs from now through Sunday (Oct. 18th).

We are pleased to announce the release of the STILLEN Infiniti Q50 Sway Bar Set.

Sway Bars are easily the biggest performance upgrade you can make to your car’s suspension. Though not as popular as lowering a vehicle because there is no aesthetic change, it is a much more noticeable and dynamic modification. Modern vehicles (especially luxury cars) are designed with comfort in mind first, and then handling is more of an afterthought with most consideration given to safety. Because of this, we often find ourselves with a car that has great potential, but has a tendency to understeer and wallow through turns.

Sway-Bar_Q50_Front_STILLEN

The STILLEN Q50 Sway Bars solve this issue by strengthening the link between both sides of the suspension. This results in less body roll, a stronger contact patch, and better balance in and out of turns. The Sway Bars are also adjustable allowing you to tune your suspension to favor Understeer or Oversteer. No matter what how you drive your Q50, the STILLEN Sway Bars are comfortable enough for everyday driving, while providing the performance you want for canyon carving and/or the occasional track day.

Sway-Bar_Q50_Rear_STILLEN

  • Made in America

AWD Setup is currently in development and should be ready in the near future.

Infiniti recently released the Q30, their latest concept vehicle which will break them into the CUV (Compact Utility Vehicle) market. This has been a fast growing segment with the likes of Audi, BMW, and Lexus dominating thus far. The Infiniti Q30 is a good looking CUV and we feel like it has a good chance to give the Lexus NX, BMW X1, and Audi Q3 a run for their money (at least in the eyes of consumers).

The new trend…

With a large group of the 1990’s and early 2000’s tuner community starting families and changing their lifestyles, it is no surprise we have began to see more modifications being done to CUVs, SUVs, and even Minivans. STILLEN wanted to give you a quick rendering of what the Infiniti Q30 could look like with even some minor modifications.

There is so much potential in this new market and STILLEN is excited to see where it goes.

While traveling to Sturgis, STILLEN founder and Racing Champion Steve Millen, had the chance to visit one of our long-time authorized dealers – Garcia Infiniti in Albuquerque, NM. While touring the Garcia Infiniti facility, Steve had the opportunity to learn more about their dealership from Carlos Garcia, owner of Garcia Infiniti, and speak with their service team. Plus, he was able to see firsthand the custom builds they are creating using STILLEN aftermarket parts with their latest showroom Q50!

Instead of telling you what everyone else has and will about the car, we would like to take a different approach to car reviews for all of you enthusiasts out there and we’re going to start with an Infiniti Q70 review. The Infiniti Q70S 5.6 (previously the M56S) is a great car overall. Coming equipped with a 5.6 Liter V8, 20 inch wheels, and Akebono big brakes. The car handles decently for a 2 ton luxury sedan designed to be comfortable, and has ample power to get up and move when you want to. So why does STILLEN find the Q70S interesting? STILLEN has specialized in modifying Nissan/Infiniti Models since 1986 and is recognized as a premium automotive aftermarket manufacturer and distributor. With STILLEN’s experience and reputation, tuning is the only logical course for a car with such a well-developed platform.

Protecting Your Investment

Before we get into talking about performance modifications in our Infiniti Q70 review, we want to make sure owners think about more than just performance parts. To keep your Infiniti Q70 running properly and looking it’s best, it’s also important to make vehicle maintenance and interior/exterior protection a priority. After all, with such a high end car, something that everyone can value is protecting their investment. As such, we always recommend taking your car to a qualified shop or mechanic for regular maintenance. Equally important is regularly washing and waxing your car to protect the exterior. Lastly, we believe protecting your car’s interior is also important. To do this, we recommend WeatherTech Floor Liners, which are an excellent idea for any owner looking for something to protect their carpets against mud, dirt, and general wear and tear.

Infiniti Q70 Review: Uncork the Power

The first thing you think of when you hear 5.6 Liter V8 is power. Now, the Q70S put down some respectable numbers on the STILLEN Dyno; 310 wheel horsepower and 346 lb-ft of torque. A bit more drive train loss than we would have expected for a car rated at 420 hp and 417 lb-ft of torque, but there is room for improvement. Under full throttle you can definitely feel the torque, but the top end power is a little lacking. The engine feels like it wants to go but there is something holding it back. A quality exhaust system to uncork the extremely quiet and restrictive stock system is a great way to get back some of that top end power that big V8 wants to make. This subsequently brings up another area for improvement on the Q70S (M56S). The exhaust note is very quiet and luxurious, which is not something most enthusiasts are interested in. An aftermarket exhaust system would remedy this very quickly as well (giving you an aggressive note for aggressive driving but maintaining a high end and quite note while crusing). A good option here would be the STILLEN Near Cat-Back M56/Q70 Exhaust. Now, if you are looking for the most power you can get from your Q70 or M56…we could recommend adding a set of K&N Drop In Filters and UpRev Tune to your STILLEN Exhaust.

Enthusiast’s Suspension Improvements

Now the Q70S (M56S) is a real stunner. The stock suspension has a lot of travel which is used to keep ride quality optimal (it is very nice). While this type of suspension soaks up speed bumps like a champ, the high ride height is something many people would like to reduce. Also, with this type of luxury suspension the handing does suffer a bit as this 4000 lb sedan wallows through turns a bit. How would STILLEN solve these two issues? Fortunately this is another modification where you can kill two birds with one stone. There a few good options here to fit your goals and budget. The first option would be a set of lowering springs like the RSR Down Sus Springs. Lowering the center of gravity on the car and firming up the suspension both improve the handling, reduce the body roll, and make the wheel gap a little more refined. Another quality option would be a set of RSR Sport-i or Black-i Coilovers. If you need that extra bit of performance while still lowering the car and maintaining factory like ride quality, this would be a great option. However, for those looking to go the extra mile and really set their car apart, we would recommend the AirREX Digital Air Suspension System. With this system you can set your ride height anywhere you want and adjust it with the click of a button.

Setting the Q70 Apart From the Rest

After suspension, it only makes sense to talk about the wheels. Now the Q70S (M56S) comes with factory 20×9 +43 offset forged wheels made by Rays Engineering. One of the first things any enthusiast would notice is the wheels are far from flush. A relatively inexpensive option for someone who loves their stock wheels and would like to keep them would be some H&R Wheel Spacers. The best option would be 10mm Spacers front and rear to move those wheels out and reduce that “sunk” factory look. One could also go with 10mm Spacers up front and 15mm Spacers in the rear to give it a little bit of a staggered look that is seen on a lot of rear wheel drive sports cars. For owners looking to personalize their Q70S (M56S) a bit more there are some great aftermarket wheel options. With such a large vehicle owners are able to fit either 20 or 22 inch wheels on the car. A great option would be the Vossen VFS-1’s (STILEN Recommends 20 or 22×9 +32 and 20 or 22×10.5 +45 for that flush fit). We all know wheels are one of the biggest modifications that can really set your car apart from the rest.

Brake System Improvements for Enthusiasts

The last thing to address in our Infiniti Q70 review would be the braking performance. Now the Sport model which we tested came equipped with the factory Akebono Sport Calipers. While impressive and very efficient, there is always room for improvement. We feel like a simple performance Brake Pad and Rotor upgrade would take the braking performance from good to great. For rotors, we would upgrade to the STILLEN Cross Drilled and Slotted or J-Hook ® Rotors paired with either STILLEN Performance Brake Pads or Hawk Performance Brake Pads. That extra bite and fade resistance really come in handy for the enthusiast that likes to do some performance oriented driving. Along with that, a GoodRidge Stainless Steel Brake Line upgrade will insure a consistent pedal feel (factory rubber lines can swell under heat and cause the brake pedal to feel mushy) so you can drive and brake with confidence.

Final Thoughts

As you can see, the Q70 (M56) is a great tuner platform and we look forward to helping you make your car unique and amazing! With just a few modifications to the Infiniti Q70, you can easily strike the perfect balance between luxury and performance. If you have questions about any of the Infiniti Q70 parts listed above or would like additional information about our suggestions, give one of our performance specialists a call at 866-250-5542 and we will be happy to help you.

NOTE: All the modification listed also apply to the Infiniti M37 and Q70 (3.7). See www.STILLEN.com for more details.

Good for 18.5WHP / 13WTQ Power Gain – CARB EXEMPT EO# D-436-22

Just announced… STILLEN cold air intakes for Nissan and Infiniti vehicles have been granted CARB EXEMPT EO#’s through 2014! For over 20 years, STILLEN has worked with the California Air Resources Board (CARB) to develop products that are compliant with OE standards of total vehicle integration and performance while still satisfying emission control regulations. With this long history in mind, STILLEN is proud to announce the cold air intakes for the Infiniti Q50 and Q60 have been granted CARB EXEMPT Executive Order numbers. These numbers mean that the part has been shown not to alter or modify the design or performance of the factory emissions control equipment. While a typical aftermarket intake will automatically fail visual inspection, intakes with a CARB EO# will not fail a visual inspection, allowing the car to still be emissions tested as usual. We are equally proud to announce year range extensions for the 2014 370Z , Maxima and more. For a full list of vehicle applications, please see below.

STILLEN was the first company to prove that a cold air intake on the VQ37 engine could actually make power and is still recognized as the leading cold air intake with the highly sought after Generation 3 long tube cold air intakes for the 370Z, G37 and Q60.   It took 6 months of in-house R&D and testing and 56 different variations of prototype intake systems but it was all worth it and the end result was the leading cold air intake for the VQ37 equipped vehicles.

Nissan Titan Air Intake

STILLEN Air Intake for Nissan Titan CARB EXEMPT EO# D-436-22 is good for a 15WHP / 27WTQ Power Gain At The Wheels

When it came time to manufacturing air intake systems for vehicles like the Altima, Maxima, Titan, Frontier, etc. STILLEN leaned on its vast experience in manufacturing high performance parts for NISSAN/INFINITI vehicles.  On the Nissan Altima and Maxima applications STILLEN is the only manufacturer of high performance intakes that incorporates a poly-urethane ducted air intake path leading fresh air from behind the factory grille directly into the air intake filter.  Included in many of these kits is STILLEN’s unique velocity ring which increases the velocity of the air as it is drawn into the engine thus producing more power!

Note: The California Air Resources Board (CARB) is a division of the California state government and is widely recognized for having the most stringent emissions control regulations in the United States. Therefore, each of the 50 states recognizes its standards as the emissions standard for all performance parts. Each performance part that achieves CARB EXEMPT status is considered 50-state legal.
