STILLEN® is proud to announce the development of the Trupower by STILLEN cold air intake scoop for the 2019 Chevy Silverado.  Follow along as we let you in on all of the behind the scenes details that goes into developing this True cold air intake system to enhance the Chevy Silverado.

To start with the team began analyzing the 3D scanned CAD data to see how the factory air intake works.  By understanding how Chevrolet has engineered the factory system we are able to begin working on our concept for how to improve it.

We immediately saw that Chevy has developed a very unique air intake system from the factory that pulls air from the factory radiator covers to duct air into a tube that then goes in to the filter box.  The enters this tract by first traveling through the front grille area and then working its way up the radiator, through the lattice work material and the design of the hood and core support guides the air into the inlet tube.

Once we had a thorough understanding of this we began to look at ways to introduce even fresher, colder air into the system.  The team began mocking up some renderings in CAD until we had a few design ideas and were ready to bring in a vehicle for physical test fitment.

We always bring in a vehicle for physical test fitment before we proceed with building prototype parts because it is pretty common that the CAD data is missing a part, or some detail that you can only see once you have the subject vehicle in front of you.  This was the case again with the Chevy Silverado.  We immediately noticed that there were some support braces on the truck that were not present in the CAD data.

Additionally, with the vehicle in hand we are able to begin gathering engineering data from the vehicle.  We start by installing a series of sensors under the hood that allow us to monitor the temperature of the air in specific areas around the engine bay.  This way we can design our air intake system to bring in the coldest, freshest air possible.

With all of our engineering data, CAD models, and physical inspections completed we are able to begin building our prototypes.  Stay tuned for our next post and videos that walk through the product design and function in more detail.

In November 2019 STILLEN was invited by Kia North America to introduce our performance parts and poly-urethane styling accessories to the Las Vegas dealer summit.  This was a great opportunity for Kia dealerships to learn about all of the ways they can offer aftermarket accessories by STILLEN to allow their customers to get even more enjoyment out of such a fantastic car.

STILLEN is proud to say that all of the parts on this Kia Stinger are Made in USA in our Southern California manufacturing facilities.

It is with tremendous pride and excitement that STILLEN announces the launch of the 2014-2020 Toyota Tundra Trupower by STILLEN cold air intake system.  This product release culminates 18 months of product development and testing on this particular air intake.  STILLEN has developed the only true cold air intake available for the third generation Toyota Tundra.

With this particular air intake STILLEN has increased the volume of the air box while also increasing the flow.  The increased flow comes from the radiator shroud inlet system which guides air through the vehicle’s core support and into the larger poly-ethylene airbox.  This design lowers the intake air temperatures back to ambient more than 60 seconds before the factory intake system and far sooner than any other aftermarket intake available.  The Trupower by STILLEN air intake is the best Toyota Tundra intake available today.

Features and Benefits:

  • Achieves ambient air temperatures faster than any other intake on the market
  • Achieves ambient air temperatures 60 seconds faster than factory air intake
  • +20 horsepower increase*
  • +20 torque increase*
  • Easy installation- no cutting/modifications required
  • Serviceable air filter with limited lifetime warranty
  • Made in America

STILLEN is proud to offer this new brake cooling option for Z34 Nissan 370Z owners looking to improve track times and lower brake temperatures. The Nissan 370Z‘s nose is famously restrictive, which prevents the brakes from getting enough airflow to adequately cool themselves, resulting in infamous brake fade issues on the 370Z. The airflow problem on the 370Z is enough of an issue that even high performance brake rotors, pads and fluid don’t help that much, which is what led us to develop this MUCH NEEDED brake cooling kit.

Made using the same high-heat motorsports-grade ducting used on founder Steve Millen’s #75 Nissan 300ZX Race Car, this kit is of quality you couldn’t replicate yourself at the hardware store. Dryer vents, these are not. These kits can be used with both Stillen Sport Rotors and Metal Matrix brake pads, AP Racing Brake Kits, and other 370Z Brakes

The way your brake rotor cools itself is by throwing hot brake gases out through the vents along its outer edge, drawing in fresh air from the center of the rotor. Designed to fit PERFECTLY on your wheel hub at EXACTLY the right clearance, the brake duct mounts on the wheel hub are not powdercoated to ensure each metal duct is precisely the thickness specified to ensure there are no ABS/TCS/sensor issues.
This cooling kit fixes the 370Z’s fatal flaw – while the kit it a little on the spendy side at $358 or so as of press time, consider – it’s a heck of a lot cheaper than your insurance deductible would be – not if, but when – brake fade inevitably rears its ugly head and puts your 370Z into so-called ‘ice mode’.
The efficient design of the STILLEN 370z brake cooling kit can lower brake surface temperatures by as much as 25%. Or as much as 140F. (Yeah that’s a lot of heat). The best part about this kit is it can be used with just about any brake set up and it works perfectly with the STILLEN 370Z front bumper for 2009-12 Z34 Nissan 370Z (STILLEN 370Z bumper fang inserts required) or the Stock 370z front bumper, WITHOUT any cutting.
We spared no expense in the quality of components of this kit, from the High Temperature hoses to the CNC machined stainless steel mounting brackets. We made sure that everything fit perfectly and worked perfectly.
After we made sure all the components of the kit fit properly, we decided to take our test vehicle to the Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, CA for some serious testing.

We installed the Nissan 370z Brake Cooling kit on one side of the vehicle and left the other side untouched. We then installed temperature sensors on both sides of the vehicle to give us our comparison figures.

Steve Millen Testing the 370Z Brake Kit

Steve Millen Testing the Z34 Nissan 370Z Brake Cooling Kit

The results ended up being much better than we expected, and we saw a difference in over 140 F between the two sides. In case you’re wondering what the advantages of running cooler brakes are, here’s a quick list:
  • Decrease in braking distance – Reduction in brake fade
  • Prevents warping – Reduced chance of pad glazing – Extends life of brakes
  • Reduces the chance of brake fluid boiling
  • Decreases the chance of catastrophic damage to brake system
  • Improved track time and longer track sessions

Below is an illustration on how brake discs vent out heat under operating conditions, as you can see from the illustration, brake temperatures will substantially increase under periods of prolonged use. Our 370z Brake Cooling kit is specifically designed to reduce brake surface temperatures by supplying a constant stream of fresh air to the brake rotor, allowing it to vent out heat more efficiently.

Diagram of STILLEN Rotors

Diagram of STILLEN Rotors

How did we get these results? Here’s the methodology we used.

As we mentioned, testing was performed with the brake cooling kit connected on one side, and not the other. Thermo-couplers were installed on the inboard friction surface of the rotors and connected to professional, race grade, data logging equipment. This testing environment ensured accurate readings under identical testing conditions. During testing the non-cooled rotors reached 600 degrees while the cooled side only reached 456 degrees. This is a temperature difference of over 140 degrees or 25%. The Brake Cooling Kit outperformed our expectations, and decreased rotor temperatures by 25% from side to side. The cooling kit spent a good amount of time with STILLEN’s engineers, and the results are a testament to their dedication and hard work. Testing showed not only does this kit keep the brakes cooler, but it better manages the temperature keeping the rotors at a more consistent temperature thus reducing the thermal cycling of the rotor.

From weekend warriors to the occasional autocross 370z owners, The STILLEN 370z Brake Cooling Kit is sure to become a “must have” item.

Front Lip Spoiler:

Enhancing the aerodynamic performance of such a finely tuned car like the GT-R is no small feat.  When developing the car Nissan did a great job of developing an aero package that works well, but left some room for improvement for the true enthusiast.  One of the most common complaints of GT-R owners is the car has a tendency to “push” when exercised hard on a race course (understeer).  Two ways to fix this condition are through the suspension, or increasing downforce via aerodynamics of the car at higher speeds.  Increasing the aerodynamic downforce keeps the front end of the car planted and therefore improving front grip, reducing the “push” effect.

The STILLEN Urethane Lip Spoiler adds 2″ of length to the OEM fascia, and installs directly onto the vehicle over the factory piece. This lip spoiler is designed to hold additional air onto the nose, with flares on the side corners producing a canard effect for extra control.

Another major benefit of the front lip spoiler is the durability.  Constructed out of high-quality polyurethane, this front spoiler is nearly indestructible and carries a limited lifetime warranty. This means it can stand up to the hazards of the race track or the drive around town with 100% driver/owner confidence.

Side Skirts:

Continuing the aerodynamic stabilization of the GT-R, STILLEN has developed new 2009-15 Nissan GT-R side skirts with a 2 inch ledge built in to apply more downforce to the car.  This design comes from the testing performed on the legendary IMSA Nissan 300ZX, campaigned in the IMSA sports car series at Le Mans, Daytona, and Sebring.  Tested in the Lockheed Martin wind tunnel, the Nissan engineers found that by enhancing the side ledge on the rocker it applied a incremental amount of downforce at higher speeds thus keeping the car planted and more stable through high speed corners.

Another major benefit of the rockers is the greatly improved appearance.  Offering a much more aggressive look and race proven engineering these rockers are sure to catch attention and compliments.

Just like all STILLEN body work these are manufactured in durable polyurethane, ready for paint, and offer a limited lifetime warranty.  Perfect for daily driving or track days and utilize the factory skirt mounting points to ensure a perfect fit and finish.

To start, I’d like to make it very clear that “I get it.”  Electric vehicles are cleaner, greener and, while there is some debate, these vehicles are generally considered to be more efficient. Now, with the introduction of autonomous cars, vehicles are becoming more comfortable for the passengers by allowing them to relax while on their journey and not have to focus on driving.

RCD_car-small

In theory, this is great.  Commuters everywhere will enjoy a little extra free time during their drive to and from the office. However, once you start thinking about everything you do with your vehicle other than driving from point A to point B on a daily basis, you realize what the sacrifice will be.

STILLEN Modified Nissan Titan

More Than a Commute

Personally and professionally, I enjoy working on cars, customizing them, and making them my own.  I also enjoy loading up my truck to head out to the desert and go off-roading, dirt biking or shooting. Then, there is the feeling of jumping into a high horsepower, highly modified Camaro, Mustang, or Z and having some fun rowing through the gears or finding a windy road and feeling the tires grip and the car pushing hard. Every car enthusiast, outdoors man, or even the average person who enjoys driving will agree our cars are more than just a way to get from one destination to another.  Every car guy I know parks their car and looks back at least once while they walk away.  We aren’t checking to see if our coffee was left on the roof.  We’re not checking to see if we remembered to turn off our headlights.  We’re just checking…We’re eyeballing our car because it just looks that good and we want to keep looking at it.

This passion can not be described.  It can not be explained.  It’s just something that you either have, or you don’t.  Every automotive enthusiast is an artist in their own way.  Getting across their own expression, their own inspiration.  This is something that can not be deciphered by an algorithm or through some flow chart.

Tango-T600-Feature-1211

Electric Vehicles: Savior of High Performance Vehicles?

A few years ago, I saw an episode of Top Gear UK where James May was driving the Honda hydrogen powered concept production car.  During his test drive, he met with the unofficial car-guy poster boy, Jay Leno.  Mr. Leno had an incredibly insightful and optimistic view on the future of automobiles for gear heads.  Alternative fuel vehicles are actually the savior of the high performance vehicles.  Prior to cars people used horses for transportation.  As cars became more prevalent and more affordable this saved the horse. Now, the horse is seen as a creature of beauty, something to be treated with the utmost respect and care.

The utopian thought is that perhaps electric vehicles and/or autonomous cars will preserve the performance and enthusiast vehicles we currently enjoy. The Tesla P85D and later P100D certainly were steps in this direction – a few outliers like the Tango EV have focused on delivering blistering performance as well as the practicality of an EV. These are early examples but a step in the right direction.

Closing Thoughts

As technology moves us closer to a day where commuters have electric vehicles and autonomous cars as a commuting option, remember the feeling of freedom that’s tied to your car. What I am suggesting, is this:

Continue innovating with new technologies, but preserve the good tires that allow you to enjoy putting a car through its paces on a windy road. Preserve the gasoline that helps create the horsepower that provides the thrill of the drive for those of us who like to get our blood pumping.  Preserve the suspension upgrades that allow you to get off the highways and city streets to go off-roading.  Preserve these magnificent vehicles for those of us who enjoy our cars. To us, they are not a just a tool that provides us away to get from one destination to another, but are an extension and expression of ourselves.

With all that being said, you’ll never find an electric or autonomous car in my garage.  Long live the internal combustion engine!

We have finished final production on the new STILLEN Stainless 370Z Cat-Back Exhaust System, and wanted to share the pictures, video sound clip and dyno sheets with you.
